Swimming at Brierley

At Brierley, we use Pools to Schools to provide our children with high-quality swimming lessons right here on site. They supply a heated swimming pool, and lessons are delivered by coaches from Sports Coaching North West for children in Years 2–6.

Having the pool on site is a fantastic opportunity for our children to develop their swimming skills, confidence and water safety in a familiar environment. We look forward to welcoming Pools to Schools and the Sports Coaching North West team back again next year!

Swimming Kit

Please make sure your child brings the appropriate swimming kit on their swimming day:

Boys: Swimming shorts that finish above the knee.

Girls: A swimming costume. Bikinis and tankinis should not be worn for school swimming lessons.

A towel

Goggles: Children may wear goggles, but parents/carers must provide a permission letter to the class teacher.

Children are also required to wear a swimming cap during their lessons. Swimming caps help us to keep the pool cleaner for longer and also help to keep children's hair dry.

If your child already has a swimming cap at home, they are very welcome to bring it with them. If your child has long hair, please make sure it is tied in a low ponytail on their swimming day, as this makes putting their swimming cap on much easier.

Year 6 Swimming Outcomes 2025/2026

As part of the National Curriculum, we are required to publish the percentage of pupils in our Year 6 cohort who can:

• swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

• use a range of strokes effectively

• perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

For the 2025/2026 academic year:

23 out of 30 pupils (77%) were able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres and use a range of different strokes effectively.
